Marlwood School launched the ‘Brainbox’ scheme in
2005. All pupils coming to the school complete a
Brainbox; a set of activities related to how the
brain works. The pupils complete work in English,
Maths and Science and they also create a 3-D mask
that sums up their interests and personality
traits. The masks are used as a tool to generate
an introduction to staff and fellow pupils. By
explaining what is on the mask, they describe
some details about themselves.

Each year we display the masks in the school
library and this is a selection of the most
recent contributions from the present Year 7. The
scheme has been recognised by Ofsted as one of
the positive features of Science College work and
one other school in the local authority has
recently adopted the idea. Recent additions to
the Brainbox have included a Music activity
generated by Almondsbury Primary School. Further
developments are planned to keep the activities
fresh and exciting.
