Marlwood's Year 7 cohort is typically composed of pupils from up to 40 different primary schools.
Preparation for the September transfer begins early. Marlwood staff liaise closely with Year 6 class teachers and in the Spring, parents are invited to nominate any special friends whom their son or daughter might like to be with in their tutor group - the school endeavours to match at least one of these names.
Later in the Spring, the Assistant Head in charge of Key Stage 3 and Year Seven transition, together with the Head of Year Seven visit children due to transfer to Marlwood at their primary school. Pupils also receive our Brainbox© transfer materials which are a series of activities focusing on learning styles, designed to bridge the Year Six to Seven transition.
Parents are invited to an information evening in July where they can meet members of Marlwood staff and find out in which tutor group their child will be placed. Where possible they will also meet the tutor.
Year Six have two opportuntites to visit Marlwood. In March 'Welcome to Marlwood' day gives students the opportunity to sample a variety of lessons with subject specific staff. In July students will meet their tutor when they will discuss their Brainbox work and become more familiar with the layout of the school and day to day operations.
